Toronto’s Japanese taiko and music ensemble Nagata Shachu has announced plans for a DJ and breakdance collaboration at the city’s Fleck Dance Theatre on Mar. 11.

Spin-off will feature DJ Dopey, a Disco Mix Club champion and a founding member of Turntable Monkz. Also from Toronto, 2024 Paris Olympians B-boy Onton and B-girl Konatsu of Supernaturalz Crew.

Nagata Shachu combines the taiko percussion tradition with new musical influences. A release announcing the gig says the group’s goal is “to rejuvenate this ancient art form by producing innovative and exciting music that seeks to create a new voice for the taiko.”
