Avant-garde legend Pharoah Sanders has passed in Los Angeles, according to his record label Luaka Bop. He was 81. Born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1940, Sanders given name was Farrell. Byron Asher says he named his quintet Basher after the nickname he earned in high school. The oft-posed question: “what would a band called Basher sound like?” is said to be at the project’s origin. Here’s at least one answer, from Basher’s forthcoming LP Doubles. The full album drops Sept. 30 on Sinking City Records.
