Mixcloud is limiting the number of shows it will host for producers on its basic service tier. Beginning Dec. 1, a maximum 10 shows will be allowed.

Nico Perez, the platform’s chief executive officer and co-founder, says the company can no longer afford to cover its royalty and hosting costs.

“[E]very show uploaded to Mixcloud is scanned by our content ID system,” he wrote. “This enables us to identify the tunes being played and pay royalties to the artists who made them.

“[W]e’ve spent years securing comprehensive licensing deals with the major and independent labels to ensure this money is paid to the right artists. We have shouldered these costs in order to create a fair music ecosystem. Until now we’ve kept our basic tier uncapped. However, as we’ve grown our royalty and hosting costs have risen and we are not profitable.”

The Moderns has been a beneficiary of this uncapped system. As a non-profit, there is no funding for hosting services beyond those provided by the WordPress platform that hosts The Moderns.

As a result, beginning Dec. 1, listeners will find 10 archived editions of The Moderns radio program at mixcloud.com/kevin-press. Mixtapes will be hosted on WordPress, and available for a limited time.
